- Vantive plans to expand its HomeAdvantage offering with the next-generation Avira automated peritoneal dialysis cycler, which is progressing through health authority processes in select countries and is not yet available for sale.
- New data presented at the congress reinforce Vantive's innovation strategy and highlight the importance of coordinated care across the patient journey—from awareness and treatment choices to workforce support.
- Among the findings, use of the currently marketed Sharesource Connectivity Platform was associated with fewer patients experiencing hospitalization or emergency department visits and with a longer time on home-based therapy.
DEERFIELD, Ill., Oct. 26, 2026 /CNW/ -- Vantive, a vital organ therapy company with a 70-year legacy of kidney care innovation, today announced plans to expand its HomeAdvantage offering with Avira, a next-generation automated peritoneal dialysis (PD) cycler, which is currently under U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review through the 510(k) process. Avira is not yet FDA cleared and is not available for sale in the United States. Healthcare professionals attending the American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Week, held Oct. 21-25 in Denver, received an early look at the cycler.
HomeAdvantage brings together Vantive's PD therapy, supply ordering, technical support services and robust educational programs, powered by the Vantive CONNECT suite of digital solutions, to better connect home patients, healthcare providers and support teams. As the newest planned addition to HomeAdvantage, Avira is designed to provide a guided home dialysis experience with remote patient management connectivity, supporting clinical visibility and data-sharing capabilities. This advancement builds on Vantive's previously announced investment of more than $1 billion in innovation over five years, and reflects the growing body of insights supporting Vantive's approach to expanding access to home dialysis.
Avira has received CE marking under the EU Medical Device Regulation, confirming it meets EU regulatory requirements. Avira is not licensed by Health Canada and is not available for sale in Canada. CE marking is separate from Health Canada and FDA reviews and does not affect their processes.
"Kidney care is a journey for patients, not a series of disconnected treatment decisions," said Chris Toth, CEO of Vantive. "At Vantive, we are focused on expanding the care ecosystems built around the people who rely on them. With therapies designed to fit people's lives and daily routines, greater connection between patients and their care teams, and coordination throughout every step of the journey, we are helping to reshape chronic disease management for kidney patients and providers."
Collectively, data presented at Kidney Week reinforce Vantive's innovation strategy, including support for coordinated care across the patient journey—from early diagnosis, education and therapy choice to connected care and a trained nursing workforce.1,2 For example, a retrospective observational analysis found that PD patients using the Sharesource remote patient management connectivity platform with currently marketed cyclers were less likely to experience hospitalization or emergency department visits and remained on PD longer—highlighting how connected care and innovative technologies can help care teams sustain home therapy.3 (Avira was not evaluated in these studies.)
A Closer Look at Key New Data
The studies examine distinct factors that may shape access to and experience with home dialysis, including patient awareness and therapy choice, support during ongoing treatment, and nursing recruitment and training.
- Informed decision-making can support therapy decisions: Earlier in the care journey, "Role of Primary Care Physicians and Nephrologists in Peritoneal Dialysis Awareness, Education, and Modality Choice: Insights from a National Survey Among PD Patients in Japan" (TH-PO0889) surveyed 4,187 PD patients nationwide. Primary care physicians were the first source of PD awareness for 45.1% of respondents, while nephrologists and patients were central to therapy education and modality selection, highlighting complementary roles in informed decision-making. Because the cross-sectional survey relied on self-reported data, the findings may not be generalizable beyond Japan's health care system.
- Successful home dialysis programs require increased nursing recruitment, training and education support: The study, "Addressing the Home Dialysis Nurse Shortage: A Survey of Factors Influencing Recruitment and Retention in the United States" (FR-OR050), was conducted by Arbor Research Collaborative for Health through the Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (PDOPPS), with support from Vantive. It surveyed 125 U.S. home dialysis and hemodialysis nurses. Although 67% reported receiving zero to three months of training, 54% said they needed more than six months to work independently, and 42% managed more than 15 patients on their own. Respondents identified formal training and mentorship, manageable workloads, compensation, schedule flexibility and organizational support as recruitment and retention priorities. Because the cross-sectional survey used self-reported responses gathered through outreach to home dialysis program directors, the findings may not represent all U.S. nephrology nurses.
- Remote patient management is associated with lower hospitalization rates, fewer emergency department visits, and improved rates of sustaining therapy for PD patients: Supporting patients after they start PD is another part of the coordinated-care challenge. A retrospective observational study funded by Vantive, "Effect of Remote Patient Monitoring for Peritoneal Dialysis on Health Care Resource Use Among U.S. Patients with End-Stage Kidney Disease" (FR-PO1090), linked administrative claims with Sharesource Connectivity Platform data for U.S. adults receiving PD from 2020 through 2023. In a propensity-score-matched analysis of 2,461 Sharesource users and an equal number of nonusers, Sharesource use was associated with fewer patients experiencing hospitalization (55.2% vs. 58.9%) or emergency department visits (59.5% vs. 65.5%) and a longer median time to transfer to hemodialysis (39.4 vs. 21.5 months). Because the study was observational, it cannot establish causation, and residual confounding or differences in data capture may have influenced the findings.
